How consultancy works
A consultant is someone you ask for advice and who can give you expert guidance in their field. I offer marketing consultancy services – advice, expertise and guidance about all aspects of marketing for creative businesses.
Here’s a guide to the consultancy process.
The first step is to get in touch with a marketing consultant you like, and explain to them what you think the work is – even if you’re not sure, any first ideas will help. If you’d like to get in touch with me, my email is firstname.lastname@example.org.
Next, you and the marketing consultant will create a brief – a document that explains what the problem is and what needs to be investigated.
I like to create my briefs through a face-to-face meeting (normally around an hour) where we can talk in-person about your ideas and business challenges. This gives me a chance to pick up on those ‘in between the lines’ messages and get to know how you like to work. If face-to-face isn’t possible, then we can do it via Skype or on the phone.
The briefing process I offer is completely free and you’re not obliged to go any further with the work, even after we’ve had our meeting.
Then, the marketing consultant will write up the brief into something more formal, do some research and come back to you with a set of recommendations. Recommendations are the work they think needs to be done which the consultant can carry out.
Every creative business is different, so I recommend different things for each one. However, we might do a half-day workshop together, spend a week reviewing your business, or decide to work together once every couple of months. My recommendations will be detailed, clear and include accurate costs so you know in advance exactly how much the work will be.
The recommendations I offer are completely free and you’re not obliged to go ahead with any of them.
If you decide to go ahead with the recommendations, this is where you and the consultant will do the actual work. This could be a workshop, an intensive training course, or something completely different.
You and your consultant will get together, discuss your business, use creative thinking techniques and answer your problems with appropriate solutions.
My hourly rate for consultancy is £60, and the minimum time you can book is one hour.
After your consultant has conducted the work outlined in their recommendations, they’ll do a write-up of the results for you along with any other helpful materials. If you work with your consultant long-term they might do this at regular intervals.
I make sure my write-ups are easy to understand, clear and easy to use so that you can keep referring to them in the future to help you market your business successfully.
Now, your consultant will take a step back and you’ll put into practice what you’ve learn from the work and the write-up. You might decide to hire other people to help you, or work on doing it yourself.
Finally, you and your consultant will have a catch up meeting to see how you’re getting on with putting the ideas into practice.
I like to catch up with my clients face-to-face, but Skype or over the phone works just as well.

We can work through the ideas at your place of work, or somewhere that’s creative, interesting and conveniently-located. The consultancy services are perfect for individuals, but if you have a team then getting them involved can often bring about much better results for your business and your marketing.
The first briefing meeting will normally take around an hour. Each creative business is different, so the work itself can vary in how long it takes – but I make sure it’s flexible to fit in with your schedule.

Alongside my business, I work as a Teaching Fellow at the University of Leeds, training Fashion Marketing undergraduates to become marketers with integrity. I’ve been a guest lecturer at London College of Fashion and a conference speaker in New York and Milan.
My business is a creative one, and so’s my background. I have a BA in Design and an MA in History of Art, have been published in international journals and was shortlisted for the 2014 ModeConnect International Fashion Writing Competition (in association with Laurence King Publishing).
